Optimal etherification of 6C olefinic cut

Prepn. of ethers from a predominantly 6C olefinic charge contg. directly or potentially etherifiable olefins is claimed. The etherifiable olefins are etherified in the presence of a catalyst and a 1-4C alcohol, and the potentially etherifiable cpds. are isomerised in the presence of an isomerisation catalyst producing an effluent which is re-cycled to the etherification zone. Pref., the process comprises 4 stages: (1) an etherification zone of the etherifiable cpds. in the charge; (2) sepn. of the effluent from (1) into a prim effluent comprising pure ether and sec. effluent contg. hydrocarbon; (3) isomerisation of the potentially etherifiable olefins in the sec. effluent from (2) to give an isomerised effluent; (4) recycling of the effluent from (3) to the etherification zone. Also claimed, is the ether obtd. by the process its use as an additive to a petrol fuel and the treated fuel thus obtd..
