PURPOSE: To obtain an ultraviolet absorbing material made of YbPO4 which material absorbs light only in the infrared range with excellent absorption properties in the near infrared range in particular and does not absorb light in the visible light range while having a good affinity for an ink. CONSTITUTION: This ultraviolet absorbing material is high-crystallinity YbPO4 particles having a particle size of at most 0.5μm. The YbPO4 particles may be surface-treated with a coupling agent. The treatment of surface can prevent aggregation of the particles, and can improve the chemical stability of the particle surfaces against solvents, acids, bases, etc., and the physical strength of the particles. For preparation of the YbPO4 particles, an ytterbium alkoxide and a phosphoric alkoxide are hydrolyzed. The hydrolysis is pref. effected in the presence of ultrasonic waves because the hydrolysis reaction is promoted. Tributoxytterbium and phosphoric tributoxide are pref. used as the alkoxides.
