A security device is claimed for use with a machine incorporating a potentially dangerous tool with regard to the operator of the machine, the device comprises: (a) at least one metal wire (9) acting as a proximity detector situated close to the tool (1) and able to be displaced laterally; (b) a metal mass (1) situated facing and a small distance from the wire (9) which comes into contact with the latter when it is displaced; (c) two ultrasonic transducers (11, 16), at least one of which is connected to the wire (9); (d) an excitation circuit (12) connected to one (11) of the transducers and (e) a detection circuit (18) connected to the other transducer (16) and a controller (3) for the machine to automatically stop the machine when a signal satisfying a chosen condition, such as the contact of a foreign body with the proximity detector (9), is received.
