The sliding roof is for a road vehicle and comprises at least one roof cover alternately closing and opening a section in the vehicle roof. Along a track parallel to the longitudinal edges of the roof section run guide rails longitudinally. A drive device is provided for the roof cover. In a rear area of the vehicle, partic. in the area behind the rear seats is a box-type accommodation for the parts of the roof cover. The parts of the roof cover are supported via slide pieces at least longitudinally displaceably on the guide tracks of the guide rails. The guide rails supporting the roof cover (5,6) are divided into two longitudinal sections, whereby the rear longitudinal section is pivotable around an axis crossways to the direction of travel by a pivot drive.
