PURPOSE: A method for calculating air fuel ratio of an engine for reducing time for activating a catalyst is provided to rapidly increase temperature of the engine to temperature in which the catalyst is activated. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises the steps of: a step(ST1) setting an initial air fuel ratio, lambda; a step(ST2) multiplying lambda by a compensation value, M1, corrected by an air flow rate meter; a step(ST3) multiplying lambda*M1 by a compensation value, M2, corrected by an oxygen sensor; and a step(ST4) multiplying lambda*M1*M2 by the initial air fuel ratio, lambda to get final air fuel ratio. The final air fuel ratio is higher than the initial air fuel ratio to rapidly increase temperature of an engine.
