An assembly pre-loosens bulk tobacco particles prior to the separation of foreign objects. The bulk feed of cut tobacco is released into a chamber containing a series of parallel rotating cylinder units. Each unit has an inner, powered cylinder, inside an attached sleeve with a rotating array of brushes or bristles. The sleeves are removable for cleaning.
