The engine has a crankcase with side wall sections (12,13) which extend beyond its end wall (9). These form a box (14), which has a gap (15) nearest the cylinder head, and another gap (17) nearest the sump. The gap nearest the cylinder head is bounded by a web (16) which links the upper ends (12',13') of the side wall extensions. Both the upper ends and the web are flush with a flange surface (5) on the crankcase to which the cylinder head can be fastened. The lower ends of the side wall extensions may also be linked by a web (18) and this may be flush with the connecting surface for the sump.
