PURPOSE: To provide a cutting tool of surface coated WC based cemented car bide excellent in intermittent cutting. CONSTITUTION: The coating is made on surface of a WC based cemented carbide base with WC and Co as main components with the following, in order from the base; an inner layer of TiNi layer, of average crystal particle diameter up to 0.05μm and of average layer thickness 0.05-0.5μm, an intermediate layer of single layer TiC layer or TiCN layer, or plural two layers of them, of average crystal particle diameter up to 0.05μm and average layer thickness 0.05-0.5μm, and an outer layer of TiCN of TiCN layer, having columnar crystal particles grown in direction of layer thickness, of average layer thickness 2.0-15μm. The coating is further made on outside of the outer layer, with an outermost layer of single layer, Al2 O3 layer, TiN layer or TiCNO layer, or plural two or more layers of them, of average layer thickness 0.5-10μm.
