The swimming pool cover has multiple horizontal panels (3) connected edge-to-edge by transverse hinges (4A,4B). The hinges are positioned alternately above and below the panels so the cover can be folded accordion-style. The ends of the hinges extend to provide grips. The edges of the panels slide along the edge of the pool. An electric motor (8) drives a chain (8) running on sprockets (9,10,12) so it traverses a triangular path. The chain grips the end of the nearest hinge and carries it upward to a support rack (6). Downward facing hinges have an extension that is supported by the rack. Upward facing hinges fall to near the ground. The cover is replaced by reversing the motor.
