A surface treating apparatus and method of a magnesium engine block are provided to form a dense oxide film on the magnesium surface so as to prevent corrosion and surface erosion of coolant during the engine operation. A surface treating method of a magnesium engine block comprises a step of arranging an electrode within a water jacket(202) of a magnesium engine block(200) while keeping the water jacket airtight, a step of circulating electrolyte solution within the water jacket, and a step of connecting electrically stable metal to a cathode and the electrode electrified by the electrolyte solution to an anode and then applying DC or AC voltage so that an oxide film is coated on the water jacket surface.
