4,5-Dicyano-imidazole derivs. of formula (I), and their addn. cpds., are new: R1 = 1-6C haloalkyl, 1-6C hydroxyalkyl, dihydroxy(1-6C)alkyl, or a gp. -(1-6C alkylene)-A; A = 1-6C haloalkoxy, 1-6C haloalkylthio, 1-6C haloalkylsulphinyl, 1-6C hydroxyalkyl, T'CO, phenyl or benzodioxolyl; phenyl or naphthyl (both opt. substd. by 1-3 Q), a 5-membered, opt. aromatic, mono- or bi-cyclic heterocyclic gp. (which contains 1-3 N, O and/or S atoms), opt. substd. by 1-3 halo or R; a 6-membered, non-aromatic, mono- or bi-cyclic heterocycle (contg. 1-3 N, O and/or S atoms), opt. substd. by 1-3 Q' or by one gp.
