Character reading device for image input containing character strings

The device includes a selection device (3) to select a section so that individual character recognition can be carried out section by section. The result is stored in a temporary memory (4), where a word search unit (5) looks for a possible character string corresp to that result. The result from the word search unit is stored in another temporary memory (6). A test participation regulation unit (7) controls the sectioning of the test subject and a proposed character string for the test subject, based on the result stored in the word search temporary memory. A checking unit (8) makes a comparison between the test subject and the proposed character string and rejects it if it does not meet certain preset conditions.
