PURPOSE: To simply and profitably obtain the subject compound useful as a processing agent, a raw material for synthesizing polymers, a cement additive, etc., in a high yield by bringingα-hydroxyisobutyric acid amide and ammonia (compound) into contact with a solid acid catalyst at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION: (A)α-Hydroxyisobutyric acid amide and (B) ammonia (compound) (e.g. ammonia, ammonium hydroxide, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, ammonium halide) are brought into contact with (C) a solid acid catalyst (e.g. a metal element phosphate salt) at 150-500 deg.C to obtain the objective compound. The use amount of the component B is preferably 0.001-40 moles per mole of the component A.
