SOLID FRAME FOR MACHINE TOOL

PURPOSE: To provide a space frame system capable of moving a workpiece support but capable of maintaining positional accuracy in the space frame system for use with a machine such as a machine tool. CONSTITUTION: A space frame system 10 includes a base 16 and a machine component such as a workpiece support 18 mounted to this base. A first space frame 12 is mounted solely to the support 18. A separate second space frame 14 is connected to the first space frame 12 by a plurality of extensible legs 26. Another machine component such as a tool holder 20 is rigidly mounted to the second space frame 14 for cooperation with a workpiece on the support 18. As the legs 26 are independently controlled, the tool holder 20 is moved along a desired path to the support 18 to perform various cutting operations on the workpiece.
