The invention provides a composition for attenuating mesangial cell proliferation, comprising an amount of a compound of formula (I) wherein: R>1< is a member of the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, nitro, benzo, lower alkyl, phenyl and lower alkoxy; R>2< is a member of the group consisting of hydroxy, acetoxy, and lower alkoxy, and R>3< is a member of the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkenoxy-carbonyl; effective to attenuate mesangial cell proliferation.
