PURPOSE: To obtain a new ergosterol analog, having suppressing actions on the seed formation of plants and useful as a suppressant, etc., for the seed formation of the plants useful as a nontoxic herbicide by extracting the analog from a fruit body of a basidiomycete belonging to the family Coprinaceae. CONSTITUTION: This new ergosterol analog of formula I (R is a group of formula II or III) has suppressing actions on the seed formation of plants and useful as a suppressant, etc., for the seed formation of the plants useful as a nontoxic herbicide. The compound is obtained by pulverizing a fruit body of a basidiomycete belonging to the family Coprinaceae (e.g. Coprinus atramentarius Fr.) in a mixer and a mortar, dipping the pulverized fruit body in acetone, carrying out the extraction while gently stirring the mixture at ambient temperature for 72hr, filtering off the extract solution, then distilling away the acetone from the filtrate, adding ethyl acetate and water regulated to pH2 to the resultant residue, separating the extract by a preparative thin-layer chromatography, extracting the formed spots with chloroform, treating and purifying the resultant extract by a high-performance liquid chromatography. |
