The magnetic tape cassette device includes a switching mechanism with which a head-carrier (74) carrying a pick-up head (75) can be driven into a playing position relative to a magnetic tape (88) and then back out of this playing position again, via a transportation lever (52). The head carrier (74) can be driven by means of fast-wind key rods (33,34) out of the playing position back into a fast wind position, in which only slight contact of the tape (8) and pick-up head (75) takes place.To avoid the so-called 'Mickey Mouse' effect during operation of fast-run keys for the fast forward, and back, tape travel and the associated movement of the head-carrier and squeeze rollers, a pawl (93) operated by the fast-wind roads (33,34) and the transport lever (52) acts on the mute switch (94) so that the pawl (93), with the backward movement of the head carrier (74), causes the mute switch (94) to stop any signal from the pick up head reaching the amplifier.
