PURPOSE: To provide an ink jet recording means and apparatus using an inexpensive diode array having necessarily sufficient element characteristics and reduced in an element separation region. CONSTITUTION: In a recording means, switching is performed by the polycrystalline silicon PN junction diode 105 formed on an insulating substrate 100 and the PN junction surface of the polycrystalline silicon PN junction diode 105 is formed in the direction vertical to the surface of the insulating substrate 100. At this time, the insulating substrate 100 can be constituted of a substrate obtained by oxidizing a silicon wafer or a glass substrate. The thickness of polycrystalline silicon is set to 500-2000Åand a PN junction area can be set to 1×10<2> -1×10<3>μm<2> . Further, ink can be emitted from an emitting orifice by utilizing the film boiling generated in ink by the heat energy applied by the electrothermal converter for generating ink emitting heat energy provided to an ink jet recording means.
