The lidar system has a first mirror (M1) which deflects the light from the source (10) along a second optical axis (2) making an angle, theta, to the first reference plane (P2) which is perpendicular to the plane of polarisation (F). Prior to the mirror, the rays pass through a first half-wave retarding plate (12) whose principal direction (16) forms an angle, theta/2, to the first reference plane. A second mirror (M2) receives the back-scattered rays along a third optical axis (3) and deflects them to a measuring device (20). After the mirror, the rays pass along an axis parallel to the initial rays through a second half-wave retarding plate whose principal direction is parallel to the first.
