The liftable hatch or engine hood (2) of a vehicle has a gas pressure spring (3) arranged between the car body (4) and the hatch or engine hood (2) to move the latter to an end position with a maximum opening angle. The length of extension of a piston rod (6) out of the gas pressure spring cylinder (5) determines the opening angle. This extension length may be limited by a locking device (1) arranged outside the cylinder (5) to several positions before the maximum possible opening angle. This locking device (1) has a locking element (7') positioned on the cylinder (5) of the gas pressure spring (3) that can be made to co-operate with a matching element (8) moved by the piston rod (6) of the gas pressure spring (3).
