PURPOSE: To properly control the attachment and detachment of an ink cartridge or waste ink in a label printer using an ink jet system. CONSTITUTION: The ink storage chamber 257 and waste ink storage chamber 260 of a cartridge 201 are integrally formed and the greater part in the waste ink storage chamber 260 is packed with an absorbing element 259. An ink absorbing element 263 is provided to the insertion and extraction part of a supply needle provided to the front end surface of the cartridge 201. Further, the part where no absorbing element is present of the upper layer part of the two-layered structure of the waste ink storage chamber is formed by a partition wall 260A and the ink bled from the absorbing element to go over the partition wall 260A to be stored is detected by a detection electrode 269.
