PURPOSE: To provide a downward slope coast detecting device correctly judging a vehicle to be coasting on a downward slope. CONSTITUTION: When the accelerator opening TVO is detected to be zero by an accelerator opening sensor 1 and the one-stage difference dVSP/dt of vehicle speed obtained by a one-stage difference computing unit 3 on the basis of vehicle speed VSP computed by a vehicle speed sensor 2 is positive and also the two- stage difference d<2> VSP/dt<2> of vehicle speed obtained by a two-stage difference computing unit 4 on the basis of vehicle speed VSP is close to zero, a down- slope judging device 5 judges a vehicle to be coasting on a downward slope.
