A dry running gas seal with supplemental damping or a separate damping unit. One design operates while stationary by providing a flexible mount for either the stationary or rotary seal portions, preferably the stationary side. Another design provides a separate damping seal (410), preferably either a damping seal or a honeycomb seal (509), between the rotating and stationary seal housings or between the shaft and stationary seal portion. This design requires rotation for operation. The fluid dampened support (200) includes a network of closely spaced beams (234) that act as structural springs supporting the outer surface of the seal ring assembly for movement in any direction. The structure and space between the beams are designed so as to provide virtually any reasonable damping characteristics. |
