PURPOSE: To provide a projection type liquid crystal display device capable of projecting a bright and good-contrast picture over a wide temperature range even when the temperature of a liquid crystal element rises because of heat from a light source. CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with the liquid crystal element 2, the light source 3 generating light made incident on the liquid crystal element 2 and a projection lens 5 projecting the light outgoing from the liquid crystal element 2, and liquid crystal material whose double refraction anisotropyΔn at room temperature is 0.105 to 0.0115 and whose N-I point is 80 to 90 deg.C is used as the liquid crystal of the liquid crystal element 2.
