A radar (22) detects and produces an indication of the distance and closing speed between a vehicle (10) and a detected object in front of the vehicle (10). A signal processing unit (30) sums the vehicle speed and the closing speed between the vehicle (10) and detected object and compares the summed output with a signal corresponding to the distance between the vehicle and the detected object to provide an output to a display (20) indicating the vehicle's capability of stopping prior to colliding with the detected object. The output from the signal processing unit (30) is optionally applied to an accelarator and/or brake control circuit (34) to automatically slow down the vehicle (10). A brake pedal override switch (42) is connected to and overrides the accelerator and brake controls (34) when the vehicle operator depresses the vehicle brake pedal. A windshield wiper switch (41) output varies the distance threshold indicative of an impending collision. |
