One or more cylinders each have inlet and outlet slots and contain two opposed pistons coupled to a common crankshaft. The outer crankpins of the latter are coupled by pull rods to the piston furthest from it, and the third one to that closest to it.Two connecting rods (33,34) are coupled between the piston (14) furthest from the crankshaft (5) and a sleeve (32) sliding in the engine housing in a guide (39) parallel to the vertical axis (40) of the engine. The pull rods (35-38) between the sleeve and piston can be situated inside the outer crankpins when seen in the direction of the vertical axis. The sleeve and guide can be formed by opposite sectors of a cylinder.
