The slitting line comprises rotary shears (4), a tensioning brake unit (8) and a take up reel (10). The brake unit has several separate, individually braked pulleys (8a) over which the sheared strips (5) run without slipping. The individual strips are pressed against the braked pulleys in the area of wrap either without contact or with contact on the side away from the brake pulleys and with or without transmission of a braking torque.The brake unit comprises a main brake (9) with a set of S-shaped brake pulleys (9a,b) and a pretensioning brake with brake pulleys. The strips are pressed against the brake pulleys by one or more contacting belts (8b) wrapped partly around the brake pulleys or by roller cage.
