PURPOSE: To obtain a suppressant for the melanogenesis, containing a specific glycoside compound having strong suppressing effects on the melanogenesis of a live pigment cell as an active ingredient and capable of manifesting excellent whitening effects on the skin. CONSTITUTION: This suppressant for the melanogenesis comprises a compound selected from monosaccharides, disaccharides or trisaccharides of 4-(2,2,6-trimethyl-yl- cyclohexane)-2-butyl p-hydroxycinnamate represented by formula I (R is a residue of the monosaccharides, disaccharides and trisaccharides). The skin preparation for external use is obtained by including one or more kinds of the suppressants for the melanogenesis in an amount of 0.01-10wt.% based on the total amount therein. Glucose, galactose, maltose, maltotriose, cellobiose, etc., are especially preferred as R in formula I. The compound of formula I, e.g. a compound of formula II is prepared by providing a compound of formula III fromβ-ionone and successively passing the resultant compound of formula III through compounds of formulas IV and V. The skin preparation for the external use is excellent in beautifying and whitening effects and effective against dermal stains, ephelides, sunburn, further Addison diseases, etc., and has high stability and safety.
