Copolyesters with dicarboxylic acid units and diol units are claimed, in which 1-20 mole% of the diacid and/or diol units consist of binaphthylene gps. of formula (I), (II) or (III) and at least some of the diol gps. are aliphatic. Also claimed are: (i) a process for the prodn. of linear, fibre-forming polyesters as above, by direct or trans-esterification of diacids or hydroxy-acids of formula (IVa) or (VIa), or functional derivs. thereof (pref. lower alkylesters, esp. pref. 1-4 C alkyl esters), with diols of formula (IVb), followed by polycondensation: HOOC-X-COOH (IVa); HOOC-X1-OH (VIa) HO-Y-OH (IVb); X = 1-20 mole% binaphthylene gps. (I), (II) or (III) and 80-99 mole% other divalent aromatic or aliphatic gps; X1 = 5-18 C (pref. 6-12 C, esp. pref. 6-10 C) aromatic or araliphatic gps; Y = divalent aromatic or aliphatic gps. (ii) moulded prods. obtd,. from the polyesters by compression moulding, extrusion or injection moulding; (iii) hollow mouldings obtd. from the polyesters, such as bottles, dishes, cups etc.; and (iv) fibres obtd. from the polyesters and textile prods. produced from the fibres.
