PURPOSE: To obtain a cyclodextrin polymer having a unique property of forming clathrates in good yields by reacting a cyclodextrin derivative of which all but one of the primary hydroxyl groups are protected with a cellulose derivative. CONSTITUTION: A cyclodextrin derivative of which all but one of the primary hydroxyl groups are protected (e.g. 6-monohydroxypermethyl-β-cyclodextrin) is reacted with a cellulose derivative to obtain a cyclodextrin polymer. A suitable example of the cellulose derivative is a cellulose acid chloride obtained by chlorinating carboxycellulose or carboxymethylcellulose. By varying the protective groups of cyclodextrin, the selective adsorptivity of the finally obtained polymer can be varied.
