A method for the preparation of o-carboxyl imidazolinone compounds of formula (I) <IMG> ¢I! wherein A is CH or N; R1 is H or C1-C12 alkyl; R2 is H or C1-C6 alkyl; R3 is H, C1-C6 alkyl, or when R2 and R3 are taken together they may form a ring represented by -CH-C-CH=CH-; including oxidizing the appropriate 2-{¢(1-carbamoyl-1,2-dimethylpropyl)amino!methyl}-benzoic acid intermediate with a brominating agent. Compounds useful as intermediates in the oxidation method and methods for preparing them are disclosed.
