PURPOSE: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium suitable for high- density recording in which recording signals can be read out only in the intermediate temp. region in the spot of reproducing light beam and the provide the reproducing method therefor. CONSTITUTION: This magneto-optical recording medium 10 is obtd. by forming films including a reproducing magnetic film 13, controlling magnetic film 14, and recording magnetic film 15 on a substrate. The compsn. of the reproducing magnetic film 13 is designed so that the film is an intraplane magnetization film in the temp. range higher than room temp. and lower than the critical temp. Tsw1 but becomes a perpendicular magnetization film at >Tsw1. The compsn. of the controlling magnetic film 14 is designed so that the film is an intraplane magnetization film at temp. higher than room temp. and lower than Tsw2 but changes into a perpendicular magnetization film at >Tsw2, wherein Tsw1
