This device allows grommets, whose shape can be independent of the type of fitting, to be pushed onto an electrical cable (15), without the precise positioning of the grommet adversely affecting the condition of the electrical cable (15). For this purpose, a conveyor rail (9) of a feed device has a buffer (20) in which the grommets are stored in the correct orientation. A separating cylinder (13) having a mandrel (30) which can move up and down is arranged above the conveyor rail (9) and a pivotable fitting cylinder (14) having a grommet retaining part (32) which is seated on a piston rod (31) is arranged underneath the conveyor rail (9), aligned with the axis of a vertical hole which is fitted under the first grommet in the buffer (20), the grommet being ejected by means of the mandrel (30) through the vertical hole into the grommet retaining part (32), and the fitting cylinder (14) being pivoted into a horizontal orientation. Pivotable gripper jaws (34.1, 34.2) thereafter grip the grommet retaining part (32) and are moved together with the piston rod (31) against the cable, the grommet being pushed onto the cable and an overpressure building up in the grommet retaining part (32). ……
