Cable drill for free fall drill hole has an operating cable (8) guided by a cable drill mechanism carried by a drive mast (1), at the upper end of which is a cable deflection roller (9). The mat also carries a gear arrangement of two horizontally spaced gearwheels (2, 3) with a drive gearwheel (7) between them. A drive chain (6) passes round the gears and each of the gears (2, 3) carries a cable pulley (4, 5) to guide the operating cable. The drive gear has a free wheel arrangement so that it can act on the chain driving the gears in one direction.
