Tricyclic cpds. of formula (I) are new; where R1 = F, CN, Cl or CF3, or R2; R2 = H, 1-20 C alkyl, (with or without an asymmetric C atom), and where one or more CH2 gps. (but not those directly linked to the 5-membered ring) may be replaced by O, S, CH=CH, C?=C, cyclopropane-1,2-diyl, Si(CH3)2, 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,3-cyclopentylene, 1,3-cyclobutylene, or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, with the proviso that O and S may not be directly linked, and where one or more H atoms in the alkyl gp. may be substd. by F, Cl, Br or OR3 or by, e.g., a cpd. of formula (IA); R3 = H or 1-6 C straight-chain alkyl; R4, R5, R6 = H or 1-16 C alkyl, where one or two CH2 gps. may be replaced by O and/or CH=CH, with the proviso that O atoms are not directly linked to one another; and R4 and R5 together may form -(CH2)4- or -(CH2)5- if they are linked to an oxirane, dioxolane, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydropyran, butyrolactone or valerolactone system; Q1 = a single bond, -CO-O- or -CH2-O-; ring B is a cpd. of formula (IB); A1 = 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, (1,3)-thiazole-2,5-diyl, (1,3)-thiazole-2,4-diyl, where one or more H may be substd. by F, or (1,3,4)-thiadiazole-2,5-diyl; M1 = a single bond, C=C, CH2CH2, -O-CO-, -CO-O-, -CO- or -OCH2-; and m = 0 or 1.
