PURPOSE: To correctly detect a tracking error signal by obtaining a correct tracking servo signal. CONSTITUTION: A pilot signal from a recording amplifier 3 obtained by frequency-dividing a system clock with a frequency divider 2 is recorded on a recording medium in the timing of a timing signal GP1 and thereafter, the pilot signal is reproduced by a recording/reproducing head 22 and delayed in a delay circuit 4 and a servo signal whose signal is shifted by a phase shifter 5 is recorded in the timing of a timing signal GP2 . Then, the pilot signal and the tracking servo signal are reproduced by the recording/reproducing head 22 and delayed in the delay circuit 4 and then an XOR between the reproduced tracking servo signal and the delayed pilot signal is obtained in an XOR circuit 11 to be subjected to a sample-hold in a sampling hold circuit 13 and then a servo error signal is obtained.
