A closed sealed body (18) is assembled around the highly active internals (5), under water in the pond of the reactor, from at least two parts (15,17a,17b), attached to each other, and a lid (19) carrying a cutting tool (20). The internals are cut up into at least 2 separate sections (5a,5b,5c) inside the sealed body (18), with each of the sections (5a,5b,5c) held inside one part (15,17a,17b) making up the body (18). The sections (5a,5b,5c) and their surrounding body parts (15,17a,17b) are then introduced into transport containers which can then be removed from the reactor containment.
