A split socket (15) having movable facets and a drive transfer asssembly (31) for manipulating line fittings (17). The split socket (15) preferably includes first and second movable dogs (140, 142) pivotably mounted at opposite surfaces of an opening (74) in a rotatable socket. The socket opening (74) is at least as wide as the point-to-point diameter of the fitting (17). Each dog (140, 142) has a facet (170, 172) configured for engaging and rotating the fitting (17) when the socket is rotated in a first direction, the dogs (140, 142) being movable by the fitting (17) away from engagement when the sockets is rotated in the opposite direction, thus allowing rotation of the socket (15) in the opposite direction while the fitting (17) remains substantially still. The drive transfer assembly (31) includes a housing (35) and drive gear or gear train (38), the housing (35) being configured to admit the fitting (17) to the socket opening (74) directly therethrough and to assure proper orientation of the fitting (17) relative to the socket (15).
