PURPOSE: To prevent the influence due to a display pattern until its imediately before a current-voltage characteristic of a drive signal is shifted by changing an impressed voltage at the time of lighting/non-lighting in a selection period corresponding to its immediately before impressed voltage. CONSTITUTION: A deviation value of a nonlinear resistance element of the current-voltage characteristic after the voltage is impressed when a pixel is turned on is definedΔVON, and the deviation value of the nonlinear resistance element of the current-voltage characteristic after the voltage is impressed when the pixel is turned off is definedΔVOFF. That is the impressed voltages when the pixel is turned on and off are changed according to whether its immediately before state is lighting or non-lighting. Thus, the state of voltage impression until its immediately before caused by hysteresis provided in the nonlinear resistance element, that is, a difference of a variable amount of the current- voltage characteristic due to the display pattern until its immediately before is reduced. Thus, no influence of the display pattern until its immediately before remains to the present display pattern, and the occurrence of an after image is suppressed.
