An undercutter vehicle removes ballast from a railroad bed using one or more undercutter chains (12F, 12S) and one or more lifter or digger chain mechanisms (14F, 14S) which are independently positionable to allow different modes of operation suitable for avoiding different types of obstacles. The lifter chain mechanisms uses a top drive wheel at an upper end and three idler wheels at its lower end. A conveyor system (16F, 18, 20F, 20S) on the vehicle allows spoil or old ballast to be transported to the front right, front left, side or rear of the vehicle.
