Optical isolator for use in closed housings esp. in laser system

The isolator has at least a first polariser, a Faraday rotator and a second polariser. At least the components (11,12,13) of the isolator (10) which are not rotationally symmetrical with respect to their transmission properties have at least one planar edge surface (210). This edge has a defined position relative to the respective transmission properties. A carrier (31) has a groove (30). The individual components (11,12,13) of the isolator (10) are arranged in the groove (30) such that the edge surfaces (210) lie in a wall of the groove (30). The carrier (31) is preferably a silicon plate which is micromechanically structured by means of anisotropic etching. The groove (30) is preferably a V-shaped groove.
