The appts. has an electromechanical motor e.g. an electric geared motor, which drives the door or window, at least in the opening direction, via a drive shaft (4). The appts. also includes a closure spring (17) which drives the door or window in the closed direction via the drive shaft (4). The door or window can be selectively opened by hand or by the electric motor, tensing the spring (17). The door is automatically closed by the return force of the spring (17). The spring (17) engages with lever arms (a). The effect of the arms (a) on the drive shaft (4) is varied according to the angular position of the shaft (4). A helical curved plate (10) is preferably arranged on the drive shaft (4). This cooperates with an element (11) in force transmitting engagement with the spring (17).
