In order to remove a layer of thermoplastic material, especially polyethylene, adhering to a substrate, especially an aluminium foil, a shaped jet (10) of hot inert gas, typically containing helium for the most part, is directed onto an area of the thermoplastic material layer (2) in order to melt the thermoplastic material and the jet is moved with respect to the coated substrate in order to push back (11) the molten thermoplastic material.
