The method involves using a programmer device (2,3) with a control circuit, a memory (25) and an input interface (21,22) for inputting compressed codes for remote control. The compressed codes are transmitted to the programmable remote control unit (5) via an output interface (31) of the programmer (2,3). The transmitted codes are stored in the remote control unit (5). The input compressed codes are analysed in a code translator (23). They are converted to compressed codes with a predetermined data format. The codes generated in the translator (23) are transmitted into the remote controller (5). The programmer (2,3) may have a second input interface (22) for receiving remote control signals and an encoder unit (23).
