A pressure vessel 2 is closed by a lid 4 held sealingly against a rim 8 of the vessel by means of a plurality of circumferentially spaced clips 6 which are attached to the lid and engage under the rim, a biasing device, preferably in the form of a spring 24, being associated with each clip and serving to allow a limited degree of movement between the vessel and the lid so as to permit venting of the vessel when excess pressure builds up but also serving to bias the vessel and lid together to reseal them after venting. One end of the spring is attached to a transverse rod 22 carried by the clip and the other end is attached to a transverse rod 26 carried by the lid. The lid may include a hinged handle 12 positioned in a recess and a manually operable venting means for equalising pressure (16, figure 3) in the case of the vessel being an anaerobic jar.
