A valve has a housing (5) and a spindle (9) mounted in a valve housing, with inlet (14) and outlet (15) separated by a wall (16) in the centre of which a sleeve (18) is inserted to form a valve seat (19). The free end of the spindle carries a spring (29) loaded valve (22), having a flange (23) and cone (24), which is supported on the valve seat. The valve has a through bore (27) and is axially displaceable on the spindle which projects through the bore of the valve. A washer or stop (28) is attached to the end of the spindle to lift valve body from the valve seat when the spindle is retracted. The spring loaded valve allows spindle movement beyond the closing position and for the flow to be choked during the final phase of opening the valve.
