The lining pads (4,4') are vulcanised onto the sealing plate (8) in a moulding operation, using pads which are indented in profile and surrounded here by webs (7,7'). The plate is perforated in the lining pad area and the indentations (6,6') are square in area and have at least three indentations and webs extending in radial section from the gasket lubricating ports. The flat metal gasket typically has lubricating and cooling ports surrounded by the profiled elastomer lining pads as described, the elastomer in turn penetrating the plate opening to anchor the assembly for service. The webs penetrate with increasing persistence into the opening under operating load etc. so indentations and webs produce a labyrinth as leakage trap.
