PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element having a structure to enable production of oriented films having plural orientation uniform regions and to enable obtaining of a liquid crystal display element having a wide visual field angle and a process for producing such element and a rubbing roll for producing the oriented films of the liquid crystal element. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystals of the liquid crystal element formed by clamping the liquid crystals between a pair of substrates having the oriented films on the opposite surfaces are formed by adding a chiral agent having an optical rotatory power in one direction and the oriented films of a pair of the respective substrates are subjected to an orientation treatment in two directions intersecting nearly orthogonally with each other. As a result, all the liquid crystal molecules are surely twisted in a specified direction. The oriented films of the respective substrates are subjected to the orientation treatment in the two directions intersecting orthogonally with each other and, therefore, two kinds of the twisting directions of the liquid crystals in a microscopic view are realized with the respective oriented films and the visual field angle characteristic is improved. |
