PURPOSE:To provide a small modem capable of reducing cost. CONSTITUTION:In a ROM 11, a basic program 51 and a program 52A for communication data expansion are stored in an executable form and other communication programs 53-56 are compressed to a form expandable by the program 52A for the communication data expansion and stored. At the time of FAX communication, the program 56 for FAX is expanded by the program 52A for the communication data expansion, returned to the executable form, developed on a RAM 4 and executed. Thus, the size of the communication programs to be stored beforehand becomes small and the storage capacity of the ROM can be small. Thus, both miniaturization and cost reduction are possible.
