The plate comprises a base (3) and a rim (8), and is equipped with a retaining lid (1,2) which applies a pressure against the base so that an item can be can be held between the lid and base. The lid is hinged to the rim so that it can occupy two extreme positions - one pressed against the base and the other removed from it and giving free access to the base. The lid can be shaped to cover a large portion of the base, or it can be in the shape of an arm covering a relatively small portion of it. It can also be transparent and hollow, with an aperture for inserting advertising material.
